Choosing your university in South Africa

South Africa has 26 public universities. Not all of them welcome international students in the same way, and not all of them suit the same project. Here is how to choose before submitting an application.

The choice of institution also determines your visa.

Choosing a university in South Africa is not just about choosing a programme. In South Africa, the study visa is tied to a specific institution and a specific course of study. Make the wrong choice of school, and the visa becomes impossible to obtain.

The criteria

What should guide your choice

01

The February calendar

The South African academic year begins in February, not September. Applications open nearly a year in advance and close on 31 July.

02

Your actual level of English

Teaching is conducted in English. Universities require proof of level — IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 88 at UCT. A language school is often the preliminary step.

03

The whole-life budget

Tuition fees, international fees, accommodation, mandatory South African medical aid and living expenses — over three years, not one.

04

Recognition by Home Affairs

The institution must be recognised as a learning institution by the Department of Home Affairs, otherwise no study visa is possible.

The calendar

The year starts in February, not September

This is the first thing to understand, and the one that surprises Gabonese families the most. The South African academic year follows the southern hemisphere: it begins in February and ends in November. There is no start of the new academic year in September.

The consequences are real. Applications open roughly a year before the start of term. At the University of Cape Town, applications for the 2027 academic year opened on 1 April 2026 and closed on 31 July 2026 — the university specifies that no application received after this date will be considered. Stellenbosch applies the same closure, including for university residences.

If you are reading this page after the month of July, the upcoming February intake is likely closed at major universities. This is not bad news: it is the right time to calmly prepare for the next cycle, take your English test and arrive with a solid rather than a rushed application. It is also the ideal time for a language school — leaving earlier, improving on-site, and entering university the following year with a real level.

The establishments

The big universities and who they are suited to

University of Cape Town (UCT) — Cape Town

The highest-ranked on the African continent in most league tables. Six faculties: Commerce, Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, Science. It is also the most selective: places are limited and competition is fierce, including among international students. A good academic record is not always enough — you need an exceptional one.

For whom: students with an excellent Baccalauréat, a good level of English and a clear career plan.

Stellenbosch University — Stellenbosch

Fifty minutes from Cape Town, in the heart of the winelands. Strong in AgriSciences, Engineering, Economic and Management Sciences, and Medicine. A useful feature: Stellenbosch decides on the basis of your junior year results, even before your final results. You receive a provisional acceptance, which is then confirmed by your senior year results — so you know where you stand much earlier.

Note that the university is historically Afrikaans. Teaching is now largely in English, but campus life remains bilingual.

For whom: profiles in science, agronomy, engineering and management, in a smaller and quieter setting than Cape Town.

University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) — Johannesburg

The large University of Johannesburg. Very strong in mining engineering, health, law and commerce. Wits publishes dedicated documentation for international students and applies different closing dates depending on the faculties — Health Sciences close significantly earlier than the others.

For whom: those aiming for business, engineering or healthcare, and wanting to be in the country's economic capital.

University of the Western Cape (UWC) — Cape Town

Less well-known internationally, it nevertheless welcomes many African students and runs a major scholarship programme. Tuition fees are generally more affordable there.

For whom: students looking for good value for money and a pan-African environment.

English

The language school: a stepping stone, not a detour

Many Gabonese students arrive with a school-level standard of English. That is normal, and it is not an obstacle — on condition that it is addressed before at university, not during it.

South African universities require proof of proficiency. At UCT, for example, an Academic IELTS of at least 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each section, or a TOEFL iBT of at least 88. Those are demanding thresholds for someone who has never studied in English.

Attending a language school makes it possible to reach the required level, arrive in the country and understand how it works, and then enter university the following year being truly ready to follow the courses. Cape Town has several recognised English schools that welcome students from all over the world.

A point that few websites mention. To obtain a study visa, the institution must be recognised as educational establishment by the Department of Home Affairs. Not all private language schools are. A school can be excellent and still not grant visa eligibility. This is something to check. before to pay anything at all.

The method

Five questions to ask yourself before choosing

QuestionWhy she matters
What exactly is my project?«Studying in South Africa» is not a project. «Doing a BCom in finance» is. The programme guides the choice of university, never the other way around.
What is my level of English, honestly? If you haven't taken the IELTS yet, you don't really know. A level test is the starting point for everything else.
What budget can I sustain over three years?Tuition fees are only one part. Add accommodation, living expenses, the mandatory South African health insurance, and fees specific to international students.
City or campus?Cape Town is a large coastal, expensive and magnificent city. Stellenbosch is a small university town. Johannesburg is the economic heartland. This choice matters just as much as the university.
Are my qualifications recognised? The Gabonese Baccalauréat is not automatically equivalent to the South African qualification. It must be evaluated by the Matriculation Board.

The last two questions are dealt with in detail on our pages Grants and tuition fees and Admission file.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know

You can go there, but you cannot enrol directly at university. Courses are taught in English and universities require proof of your language proficiency. The usual solution is to attend a language school before starting your degree programme.
It does not automatically grant access to university. It must be evaluated by the Matriculation Board of Universities South Africa, which issues an exemption certificate. This is a legal requirement for undergraduate registration.
About a year before the start of the academic year. The academic year begins in February. Applications generally open in April of the previous year and close on 31 July at major universities.
There is no such thing as an absolute best university. The University of Cape Town is the highest-ranked on the continent, but also the most selective. The right university is the one that accepts your profile, offers your programme and fits your budget.
Cape Town for the quality of life, the proximity of the sea and an international environment. Johannesburg for professional opportunities and business networks. Both cities boast excellent universities.
No. To qualify for a study visa, the institution must be recognised as a learning institution by the Department of Home Affairs. Some private schools are not. This is a check to be carried out before paying any registration fees.
