The visa of medical treatment
South Africa has a visa category dedicated to individuals coming to receive medical treatment. It is subject to specific rules, and the order of the procedures cannot be reversed.
● A PRADeXPERIENCE service · application compiled and verified in French
It all starts with the hospital letter.
This is the particularity of this visa: it is not obtained on intention, but on confirmation. A South African institution must first agree to receive you and state this in writing. As long as this letter does not exist, no other steps can proceed.
That is why we always start with the medical file, never with the plane ticket.
What we are not
Okoumé is not a health facility and does not employ any health professionals. We do not make any diagnoses, recommend any treatments or advise on the course of action to take. These decisions belong to doctors — yours in Gabon, and the one who will treat you in South Africa. Our work is organisation: procedures, logistics, language and coordination between the two.
The order to be followed, without exception
The medical record
Your doctor describes the desired management plan. The documents are translated by professionals before being forwarded.
Acceptance of the establishment
The South African hospital or practitioner confirms in writing that a place is available and indicates the expected duration of the treatment.
Proof of funding
Confirmation of who is paying the medical and hospital fees, or proof of sufficient means to cover them.
The deposit at the mission
The application must be submitted before departure, to the South African mission. Accompanying persons must apply separately.
A visa category in its own right
The medical treatment visa is issued to persons travelling to South Africa for the specific purpose of receiving medical treatment there. It is granted for a maximum period of six months at a time.
It is distinct from the ordinary visitor visa, and it is subject to its own rules — more stringent on substance, but also better suited to a prolonged medical stay.
A point of law to know before leaving. South African law prohibits, with few exceptions, applying from within the country for a change of conditions of a visitor's visa. In other words: one does not come «to see a doctor to decide», then regularise on the spot. The application for a medical visa is made before departure.
The South African establishment's letter
This is the document around which the whole application revolves. The practitioner's or institution's letter must confirm two things:
- that a place is available in the establishment concerned; ;
- the expected duration treatment in South Africa.
This is coupled with confirmation from the person or organisation covering the medical and hospital expenses. If no insurance or employer covers these costs, proof of sufficient financial means to cover them must be provided.
Where we operate. Obtaining this letter requires an establishment to have examined a legible, complete medical file in English. This is precisely the work we coordinate beforehand — without ever expressing an opinion on its clinical content.
Accompanying persons are not covered
Unlike work, business or study visas, the medical treatment visa has no provision for accompanying persons.
Every relative who wishes to be present — partner, parent, adult child — must submit their own visitor visa application and meet the conditions on an individual basis: passport, financial means, accommodation, purpose of stay.
This is a real difficulty and is often discovered too late. A mother accompanying her child, or a son accompanying his father, gets nothing automatically by virtue of the family tie.
Therefore, these requests must be prepared at the same time than that of the patient, not after. We treat them together, as a single family file.
Extension and return
If the treatment is prolonged — a longer than expected recovery period, a revised care plan by the practitioner — a extension can be requested from South Africa, based on a written update from the doctor.
The request for an extension must be submitted long before the expiry of the current visa. Never let a visa expire while waiting for a response: the acknowledgement of receipt of the application protects your status, the absence of an application protects nothing.
On your return, the South African practitioner's report is sent to your doctor in Gabon for continuity of care. This is a step we handle systematically, because a medical trip doesn't stop at the airport.

We are familiar with the South African administrative system because we live there and have been supporting Gabonese families for years. Medical care is the doctors’ responsibility; the organisation is ours.
