Travelling between Gabon and South Africa

Two countries, one single road, in both directions. Whether you live in Cape Town and are returning home, or you are leaving Gabon to discover Southern Africa, that is our speciality.

● A PRADeXPERIENCE service · the corridor, in both directions

A single road, made in depth.

Okoumé does not offer a hundred destinations. We run a corridor — Libreville ⇄ Cape Town — and we do it well, because we have been travelling it ourselves for years. The Gabonese diaspora in South Africa, families separated between the two countries, curious travellers: these are our people.

Two African countries, but two worlds: the language, the currency, the seasons, the codes. That is precisely what makes support useful.

The journey

How is the liaison made

01

Libreville – Johannesburg

The direct flight takes about five hours and twenty minutes. With few rotations per week, booking in advance is essential.

02

Johannesburg – Cape Town

About two hours, on Africa's busiest route. Numerous daily flights and competitive fares.

03

The Addis Ababa alternative

A connection via Addis allows you to reach Cape Town. Often longer, sometimes better priced or more convenient for schedules.

04

Papers before the ticket

Visa depending on the length of stay, yellow fever certificate in both directions, passport validity. We check before booking.

Flights

What actually exists on this road

There are no direct flights from Libreville to Cape Town. That is the first thing to know, and it structures the entire journey. You have to go through a matching platform.

RouteDurationFrequency
Libreville to Johannesburg (direct)about 5 hours 20 minutesonly a few rotations per week
Johannesburg → Cape Townabout 2 hoursvery numerous daily flights
Libreville → Cape Town via Addis Ababaa day's travelas per the company schedule

The direct link between Libreville and Johannesburg is operated by a limited number of airlines, with a service restricted to a few weekly flights. This is the main constraint of the corridor: the road exists, but it is narrow. A last-minute unexpected event can cost several days of waiting.

On the other hand, the Johannesburg to Cape Town route is one of the busiest on the continent, with many airlines and fares remaining reasonable if you book in advance.

Practical tip: Allow a comfortable margin between the international flight and the domestic connection. Both tickets are often issued separately — in the event of a delay on the first, the airline of the second is not obliged to rebook you.

Visas

Both ways

From Gabon to South Africa

Good news, and it's little known: holders of a ordinary Gabonese passport is on the South African visa exemption list. Therefore, you can enter South Africa without a prior visa for a tourist, business or family stay.

With one major limitation: the exemption applies to 30 days or less. This is one of the shortest durations on the list—many other nationalities are allowed 90 days. Beyond 30 days, a visa is required, including for a simple family visit. This is also why a language course or training lasting more than 30 days requires prior application procedures.

From South Africa to Gabon

South African passport holders benefit from a favourable entry regime in Gabon. For other nationalities, a e-visa is applied for online prior departure, with a passport valid for at least six months and a yellow fever vaccination certificate.

To be checked before every trip. The entry rules for both countries change regularly and official lists are updated without notice. What is written here is accurate at the time of writing, but does not replace checking with the relevant mission before purchasing tickets.

Health

The document that we forget

The International Certificate of Vaccination against Yellow Fever is required in both directions: to enter Gabon, and by South Africa for travellers coming from an endemic zone — which includes Gabon.

It is a yellow booklet, to be kept with the passport. Without it, boarding may be refused, and it cannot be obtained the day before departure.

Malaria prophylaxis is also recommended for Gabon. Cape Town and its surrounding region are not affected by malaria.

The differences

Two African countries, two worlds

GabonSouth Africa
LanguageFrenchEnglish (and ten other official languages)
CurrencyCFA franc (XAF), pegged to the euroRand (ZAR), floating and volatile currency
Time zoneUTC+1UTC+2 — only a one-hour time difference
Dry seasonJune to September (long dry season)Cape Town: summer from November to march, dry and warm
ClimateEquatorial, hot and humid all year roundMediterranean in the Cape: rainy winter, dry summer

The best window to combine the two

Of June to September it is the peak dry season in Gabon, the ideal time for the parks, and whale season on the South African coast. Cape Town is then in winter — cooler and rainier, but also quieter and noticeably cheaper. For anyone wanting the warmth of Cape Town, you have to aim for December to March, accepting that it is the rainy season in Gabon.

Our routes

Both ways

From South Africa to Gabon

For the Gabonese diaspora living in Cape Town or Johannesburg, and for South African travellers curious about Central Africa. Return to the country, exploring the parks, family stays, journeys of remembrance. We take care of the internal logistics, often the trickiest part.

From Gabon to South Africa

For Gabonese families discovering Cape Town, visiting a child studying there, or planning to move, we organise the trip and, if the stay is longer-term, we connect you with our study and relocation services.

The combined trip

Two weeks to see both: the Gabonese parks and the Cape Peninsula, the equatorial rainforest and the vineyards. It is a striking contrast, and it is the combination that best captures the scope of what Africa encompasses.
