Moving to South Africa from Gabon
The practical bridge, in French. Visa, neighbourhood, school, bank, health insurance: we support Gabonese families and professionals at every stage of their settlement.
● A PRADeXPERIENCE service · guided installation in French
A successful installation is all about the order of decisions.
Most families start by looking for accommodation. That is the most common mistake. The visa determines what you are allowed to do, the school determines where you have to live, and the budget follows from both. Done out of order, you pay twice.
We live here. We went through these procedures ourselves, and we go through them regularly with the families we support.
The order in which to set up your installation
Identify the right visa
Work, intra-group transfer, business, remote working or spouse: every situation has its category. The wrong choice costs months.
Choose the neighbourhood
In Cape Town, the home-school-work distance structures the entire daily routine. The neighbourhood is chosen after the school, never before.
To school the children
French school, private school, fee-paying state school or international school. Please note: each child needs their own study visa.
The first 90 days
Bank account, South African medical aid, driving licence, electricity, internet connection: the logistics that make the move a reality.
Four guides to prepare for your installation
Each step has its own page, with the precise procedures, actual amounts and official sources.
Work / residence visa
The points system since October 2024, critical skills, the business visa, remote work and permanent residency.
Identify the right visa →Neighbourhoods & housing
City Bowl, Atlantic Seaboard, Southern Suburbs: where to live depending on your family, your budget and your daily commute.
Choose your neighbourhoodSchools for children
The French School of Cape Town, fee-paying private and public schools, and the mandatory study visa for every child.
Compare schools →Cost of living
Rent, healthcare policy, groceries, electricity, schooling: a fair monthly budget, in rands and CFA francs.
Estimate the budget →The accompanying visa does not permit either work or study
That is the most frequent nasty surprise, and it always arrives too late — once the family is already there.
When a person obtains a work visa, their spouse and children receive accompanying visitor visas, the validity of which follows that of the main visa.
But this accompanying visa does not grant the right to work, and does not give the right to study. A spouse who wants to work must obtain their own work visa. Each child of school age must have their own study visa.
The practical consequences are severe. A family arriving in January with accompanying visas discovers that the school cannot enrol the children, and that the spouse cannot accept the job they have been offered. Both processes must be initiated at the same time as the parent's, not after.
How much time should I allow?
The Department of Home Affairs claims to have cleared the vast majority of its visa backlog. In practice, applications lodged with overseas missions still take four to twelve weeks, even before the SAQA evaluation and professional registration deadlines.
| Step | Expected wait time |
|---|---|
| Preparation of the application file (documents, translations, police certificates) | 4 to 8 weeks |
| SAQA qualification evaluation | Variable — to be launched very early |
| Visa instruction at the mission | 4 to 12 weeks and over |
| Looking for accommodation upon arrival | 2 to 6 weeks |
| Bank account opening | 1 to 3 weeks after arrival |
Rule of prudence: allow three to six months between the decision to leave and actually settling in. And do not buy a ticket, or cancel a lease in Gabon, before you have the visa in your hand.
Please note: an immigration policy from March 2026 grants applicants whose waiver, long-stay visa or appeal application is pending status and travel concessions until 30 June 2027. This protects people already involved in proceedings, but does not exempt them from anything.
The procedures of the first few weeks
Once the visa has been obtained and accommodation found, the actual settling-in process comes down to a handful of administrative procedures that often block one another.
| Approach | What you need to know |
|---|---|
| Bank account | Will require proof of address in South Africa — hence the classic catch-22: no account without an address, no lease without an account. A letter from an employer or university often unlocks the situation. |
| South African mutual society | Mandatory for several visa categories. International travel insurance is not accepted. Must be taken out before submitting the application. |
| Driving licence | The Gabonese driving licence can be used for a time with a certified translation or an international driving permit. Beyond that, converting or taking the South African driving test becomes necessary. |
| Electricity and water | Most properties use prepayment meters. You should plan to have a UPS or a battery installed, depending on the neighbourhood and the property. |
| Telephone and internet | SIM card upon presentation of a passport and proof of address (FICA regulations). Fibre is widely available in Cape Town's residential areas. |
