It happens months before, in details that nobody explains to you.

The wrong stamp. A deadline missed by three days. Insurance that doesn’t count. A school that doesn't qualify for a visa.

Nothing too dramatic, taken one by one. But put end to end, it makes for a wasted year.

What they don't tell you

I left Libreville nearly twenty years ago to learn English in Cape Town. I knew almost nobody. I learned the way everyone learns: by making mistakes.

It doesn't matter to be wrong when you have the time. But a family preparing for a child's departure, or someone who needs treatment, doesn't have that luxury.

Okoumé was born from there. Not from a business idea — from an accumulation of things I wish people had told me.

Why this name

Okoume is our tree. Strong, precious, sought after. For generations, it was cut down and exported. Its value went elsewhere.

Okoume is taking the reverse path: instead of exporting the timber, bring the people in—and bring the value back to Gabon.

It’s an image, but it captures quite well what we do. We assist Gabonese people travelling to South Africa to study, settle or receive medical treatment. And we help those who don't know Gabon yet to discover it.

Two directions. One road.

In practical terms

We don't do a hundred destinations. We do one corridor: Libreville to Cape Town, in both directions, and we do it properly.

Which also means that you will be told when it is not worth it. When the budget doesn't add up. When the school isn't the right one. When it is better to wait a year and leave well prepared.

It is less marketable than a brochure. But it is more useful.

And now

This blog will serve that purpose: sharing what we learn by doing. The procedures, the real timelines, the mistakes to avoid, and a few stories from the road.

If you are planning something between Gabon and South Africa, write to me. The first consultation is free.

- Pradino

Il y a une chose que j’ai compris : partir à l’étranger, ça ne se joue pas au moment où on prend l’avion. Ça se joue des mois avant, dans des détails que personne ne vous explique.
